Do you or your child play sports? Sports, especially contact sports like football, hockey, basketball, soccer and lacrosse, can cause injuries to the face and mouth that could result in dental issues. To protect your teeth, gums, and tissues during sports, Dr. Bethaney B. Brenner may recommend a mouth guard.
There are three main types of mouth guards: stock mouth guards, boil and bite mouth guards, and custom-fitted mouth guards. Stock mouth guards are preformed and can be bought at sporting goods stores. They are inexpensive, but they are bulky. Taking and breathing normally may be difficult when wearing a stock mouth guard. We do not recommend this type of mouth guard, as it does not offer as much protection. Boil and bite mouth guards can also be bought at sporting goods stores. These mouth guards are made from a material that softens when placed in hot water. Once softened, the mouth guard is placed in the mouth and shaped around the teeth. Custom-fitted mouth guards are designed specifically for your smile by our dentist. An impression will be made of your teeth and a mouth guard is custom fitted. This type of mouth guard provides the most comfort and protection and is good for three seasons in a growing child.
